Burkina Faso: Vehicle handover ceremony for the provost gendarmerie

As part of the project to support military justice and local justice to fight impunity in Burkina Faso (AJUMJUP) funded by the European Union, the Coginta team in Ouagadougou carried out this Tuesday, February 20 2024, in the premises of the National Gendarmerie headquarters, for the delivery of a batch of rolling equipment for the benefit of the provost gendarmerie.

Made up of ten 4x4 pick-up vehicles, this support aims to strengthen the operational capabilities of this new system in its military judicial police mission, and thus facilitate the judicialization of anti-terrorism operations. The provisional reception of these vehicles took place in the presence of the Chief of Staff of the National Gendarmerie, legion commanders, representatives of Coginta, the Burkinabè Movement for Human and Peoples' Rights, and the Agency Belgian for Development (ENABEL) and officers of the National Gendarmerie.

The Chief of Staff of the gendarmerie, Colonel Kouagri Natama, welcomed this action to strengthen the operational capacities of the provost force and to contribute to better protection of human rights during operations to fight against armed groups. He also thanked Coginta and the European Union for their support for military justice and the operationalization of the provost gendarmerie in Burkina Faso.

For his part, the Head of the AJUMJUP project, Edem Comlan, insisted on the need for support from the Burkinabè authorities in this area, given the national context of security crisis. According to him, the handover of these vehicles symbolizes the consolidated efforts of the government and international partners for the benefit of judicialization of the theater of operations, and more accessible justice for the populations, particularly the most vulnerable. While thanking the National Gendarmerie for its collaboration in the implementation of the project, he recalled Coginta's availability to support the authorities in this regard.
